Castrating a Calf Using an Elasticator


            Castrating a calf is not something people spend their Saturdays doing, unless you belong to my family. Once every year my family throws a big party. How many parties have you been to where you spend your time castrating something? Not many. Castrating a calf with an elasticator is a very delicate process.


            A person cannot just walk up to a calf and castrate it; he or she must first rope it and tie it down. Once the head has been roped it is wrapped around a snubbing post. A snubbing post is a big cedar log that has been buried deep into the ground. There are usually two across from each other. After control has been taken of the head the hind legs need to be roped and tied to the other snubbing post.  Then, take the rope from around the calves head and tie it to the front feet. The calf should now be stretched out between the two posts exposing its testicles.


            An elasticator has four heavy wire prongs. It is a lot like a pair of pliers. The prongs pull apart when the handles are squeezed. While the prongs are together the castrating rings are put on it. Castrating rings are like green pieces of rubber. They look a lot like a green cheerio. It is better to use two just in case one breaks.
