Should we Re-introduce Capital Punishment in the UK?

Fifty percent of the world put people to death as a punishment, fifty percent do not. In this essay I will cover both opinions. For every argument for capital punishment there is an argument against. I find it hard to make up my mind on which side I take.

Capital punishment was abolished in the United Kingdom in 1964. Many people would say killing someone is crewel and inhumane, but today, so-called, painless methods have been developed. Then again the process can go wrong, once it took a man eighteen minutes to die in the gas chamber.

There are many method of execution, until the 1890s, hanging was the main way of execution. This was intentionally a crewel and painful death but was stopped after the human writes act was passed. Other methods include, the firing squad, lethal injection, the gas chamber, and Electrocution.

Electrocution is probably the most famous method of execution. This is because it was brought into use directly after hanging and is not used today. This is an extremely gruesome way of killing someone. Sometimes the victim’s eyes rest on there cheeks and the smell of burning flesh fills the air.

With the firing squad the inmate is strapped to a chair, sandbags are placed around the chair to absorb the blood. Five shooters are stand in an enclosure twenty feet away, on shooter is given blank rounds. This method is still used in Utah and Idaho.

Another method is death via cyanide gas. This was introduced in 1924. The inmate is strapped to a chair in an airtight cell. When the gas is produced the inmate gasps for air and sometimes the eyes pop. Five states still allow gassing as a sentence.

Evidence and research shows that these methods cause extreme pain to the victim. Because of this many people think these ways to death are cruel. However other people think the victim deserves the pain. But Lethal Injection is proven painless and today thirty-six of the thirty-eight death sentencing states use this method. The victim simply falls asleep and does not wake up again.

I’ve looked at reasons to kill and avoid killing someone physically but there are many other arguments.

Killing the killer is revenge, it makes the victim’s family feel better and they feel that something has been done about there loss. On the other hand the family of the convicted may be good people and they would feel bad if a relative was killed.

You could say life imprisonment is more of a punishment then a painless death, but if you keep the criminal in a prison and then let him go back into society there is a chanc...
