I. Introduction

It is popular opinion that Americans take many things for granted. They go through the course of their lives, ignorant as ever, many times not taking into account other’s opinions. They are an ignorant people, thriving in the impression that they, as a country have created for themselves. They are citizens of a superpower, most of them, untouched by poverty, watching others suffer in third world countries, without any distinct idea of what is like to really struggle. They return home everyday, from a day at work, or a day at school, expecting the bread to be on the table. Their country’s history, of pride, and the preservation of democracy has ensured the ignorance.

The history of the United States is a meager two hundred years, two centuries, and a few generations at best. The American society was formed through the close observation of the success and failures of other countries, those countries being Europe. They have not endured changes of government, while many young Europeans in our generation have just witnessed their independence. Ironic as it may be, Americans are closely watched by us - Europeans, and although they do not realize it, we are the ones shaking their heads in light of American government’s present actions, and scoffing.

Americans have been fortunate enough to not have any wars carried out on their soil, in the recent years. Although this is a noteworthy trait, it only fuels the hubris of their nation. The one’s who duly note this hubris are not the politicians, or their common citizens, it is those whose have not been affected by this euphoric onslaught, to such an extreme end. Europe.

Ignorant men raise questions that wise men answered a thousand years ago.

-Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
