            According to William E. Gibson of the Sun Sentinel, almost 38,000 Haitians

nationwide sought refuge under the 1998 Haitian Refugee Immigration Fairness Act.

The 1998 Haitian Refugee Immigration Fairness Act allows Haitians immigrants who have lived in the U.S. since December 31, 1995 to become lawful permanent residents without applying for a visa at U.S. consulates aboard.  Immigration advocates say thousand of applications are still pending and many children will become adults before their parents’ cases are decided.  In the meantime, many Haitian immigrants face deportation.  Haitians who arrived via aircraft using false documents are excluded.  Rep. Kendrick Meek introduced a bill on Thursday which was a reform of the 1998 act.
