To evaluate the prison simulation experiment in terms of ethical issues.


During the experiment there were lots of ethical and morale points brought up. Some of the issues were:


Responsibility.


For example they put young people as guards. These certain guards, who were picked from a toss of a coin. They were given no specific training. Instead they were free, within limits, to do whatever they thought was necessary to maintain law and order in the prison and to command the respect of the prisoners. The guards made up their own set of rules. Majority of these guards had no children, so they had no experience in ways to solve problems without violence. Again majority of the guards didn’t have very good jobs, so they had no experience of responsibility or people working under them. During the experience they found themselves in a new power-laden role.


Uniforms


Another ethical issue was the uniforms, which were worn by both the prisoners and guards. While the guards were dressed in identical uniforms of khaki, and they carried a whistle around their neck and a club borrowed from the police, to hit prisoners with. They were also wearing very big sunglasses, so that they could hind the emotions behind these glasses. While the prisoners were wearing hardly nothing, and during the experiment they were exposed in the nude. This would be very embarrassing and very emotional.
