About Maritime Life

The company I’ve chosen to research is the Maritime Life Assurance Company.  Maritime Life started over 80 years ago by a small group of families in Halifax and from those humble beginnings this company has grown into the 4th largest national insurance company in Canada.  This company has their head office in Halifax and provides benefits to almost three million Canadians from offices in Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, London, Kitchener, Oakville, Markham, Calgary, and Vancouver.  Maritime Life is an Imagine company and is proud to support their communities through community investment programs.  In 2004, for the fifth consecutive year, the Globe and Mail’s Report on Business magazine named Maritime Life one of the 50 best employers in Canada.

Milestones and History
Maritime Life has had some incredible milestones.  Some of these include the following:  Maritime Life was incorporated by a group of Nova Scotia families in 1922 and ranked 58 out of 60 Canadian life insurance companies.  In 1933, Maritime Life surpassed $1 million in assets under administration.  In 1959, branches opened in Toronto, Perth and Windsor, Ontario, and Montreal, Quebec.  In the 1970’s offices open across the country and begin partnering with independent financial advisors to sell products.  In 1973, Maritime Life moved into their new headquarters at the head of the Northwest Arm in western Halifax.  Maritime Life became an Olympic sponsor in 1993.  In 1995, Maritime Life ranked 12th in industry and in 1997 they celebrated their 75th anniversary.  It was a momentous year in 1999 when Maritime Life more than doubled in size through the purchase of Aetna Life Insurance Company of Canada.
