David Hubert Lawrence would have to be considered one of the greatest writers of the 1900’s.  His wide variety of works written all while fighting tuberculosis make him a very honorable and prolific writer that many people agree with.  “D. H. Lawrence was a prolific writer of everything from poetry to fiction.” (O’neil, 763) O’neil is very true when he makes this statement. Lawrence is a remarkable man with whom everyone should be familiar.

          D. H. Lawrence was a great writer of the twentieth century which is considered the most memorable century of all time.  Many events that made it great were:

¨     1903 Orville and Wilbur Wright build first successful airplane.

¨     1905 Albert Einstein proposes theory of relativity.

¨     1913 D. H. Lawrence publishes Sons & Lovers

¨     1917 Sigmund Freud publishes Introduction to Psychoanalysis.

¨     1920 Mohandas Gandhi leads nonviolent protests.

¨     1924 First British Airline begins regular operation.

¨     1927 Charles Lindbergh flies to Paris solo.

¨     1939 Hitler invades Poland; WWII begins.

¨     1940 Winston Churchill becomes Prime Minister of Britain.

¨     1941 Pearl Harbor bombed and U.S. enters WWII.

¨     1945 WWII ends as Japan surrenders.

¨     1955 Martin Luther King leads civil rights bus boycott.

¨     1957 Sputnik 1, first space ship launched.

¨     1960 Berlin Wall Built.

¨     1963 President Kennedy assassinated.

¨     1964 American troops join fighting in Vietnam.

These were some of the many great events of the twentieth century.  “Progress in science and technology was helping to make life easier and the world more comprehensible.”(Prentice Hall, 878)  “Modernism has been perhaps the most important artistic movement of the twentieth century, committed to create new forms and styles.”(Prentice Hall, 881) This summarizes this great century.  It’s obvious that the 20th century was a century with new types of artists as well as new technology that revolutionized the world.  The many events that happened during this century make it the most prolific century of all time.

          D. H. Lawrence was born on September 11, 1885, in Eastwood, a coal-mining town in Nottinghamshire, England.  He died on March 2, 1930, in Vence, France due to chronic tuberculosis that took his life at the age of forty-four.  “D. H. Lawrence is among the greatest  and wide-ranging of modern writers, a fact all the more remarkable considering that he spent so much time on the move, battling chronic tuberculosis, which cut short his life in his forty-fifth year.” (Rollyson, 1869)  Although he was born in the 19th century, he is still regarded as a 20th century author.  He was born to Arthur Lawrence and Lydia Beardsall.  His father was a coal miner and his mother was a housewife.  He became really close to his mother because he stayed home a lot due to his tuberculosis.  D. H. Lawrence’s father left school at the age of seven and never learned to read or write.  His mother failed at becoming a teacher but loved to read books.  Lawrence was the fourth out of five children.  His sisters were Emily Una and Lettice Ana, who was his closest friend out of his brother and sisters.  His two brothers were George, who would become an engineer, and athletic William Ernest, who entered business.  Lawrence was very sick in elementary school and had trouble at school because of his frail, delicate body.  He received a scholarship to Nottinghamshire High School before he soon dropped out.  He saved enough money to take a teacher training scholarship at Nottinghamshire University.  Due to his tuberculosis, he traveled widely in an effort to improve his health.
