            During the period of the Civil War, there lived a woman. This woman was one of the most influential and famous authors of her time and this present time. This poet took on her own approach to poetry which gave her a sense of individuality. Her poetry has inspired many young poets around the country. Her name is Emily Elizabeth Dickinson. I chose her because she is different, and to herself. She kind of remind me of myself. I may not be as extreme as her, but in a lot of way I am like her. She kept to herself and bothered nobody, and I do the same thing. I believe that blocking out everyone else keeps you focused on what you are doing.


            Emily Dickinson was a great poet that lived from 18301886. Emily Elizabeth Dickinson was born on December 10, 1830 in Amherst, Massachusetts. She was born to a family that was "well known for educational and political activity.  She was the daughter of Emily Norcross and Edward Dickinson. She was their second child of the three. The first was William Austin, and the third was Lavinia. Her father was a lawyer, and the treasurer of Amherst College. Emily wasn’t the healthiest child when she was an adolescent. The three siblings live on well through adulthood. Although Austin married and moved out, Emily and Lavinia lived with their parents until they died. She went to two schools from (18341847) and (18471848). She attended Amherst Academy, graduated there at sixteen, and Mount Holyoke Female Seminary. Mount Holyoke Female Seminary was a religious college for young women. The Seminary was founded by Mary Lyon in 1836. Mount Holyoke was an even more religious school that Amherst Academy. Every subject at each of the schools was taught at a Christian perspective. She started writing poems around 1850.  Her early work was more conventional. Then, after about ten years she started to differ. She was a loner at the age of twentythree, and was devoted to her writing  She bound many of her poems by herself using a needle and thread. She wrote over eighteen thousand poems of which seven were published while she was alive. She passed away on May 15, 1886 of Brights’s disease. ( (


            Emily lived through the period of the Civil War. She had some inner conflicts on whether or not to convert. When she went home in May, her father decided not to send her back. Emily felt as if she had squandered a once inalifetime opportunity. After, she became a loner, and kept her mind only on her poetry. She only attended to household chores.
