The Catholic Church

September 13, 2004

History text assignment # 1, Pg. 67

3) “Vain is the hope of salvation through letters of pardon, even is a commissary- nay, the Pope himself- were to pledge his own soul for them.”  Looking at this statement Luther is trying to state that people have useless hope for writing letters of forgiveness, and paying donations for their sins to be forgiven.  The Pope doesn’t even care of the people’s sins he’s only there for the money he is collecting from the poor. The practice that the Catholic Church had isn’t the route for salvation, yet faith alone in God could do that.  The 86th Theses posted by Martin Luther makes me think that the leader of the Catholic Church, Pope Leo, was trying to raise money in order to build St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. He made the poor give donations of that would give them partial forgiveness for people’s sins. In the 86th theses it denies the right of the Pope to sell indulgences for the forgiveness of sins. Also, it made me think how the Pope and the other officials of the Catholic Church had no knowledge or comprehension of the Bible, or even read it.  They were wicked people who were preoccupied with wealth and power, but never accomplished God’s will. If being rich is a good thing, just look at who God gave money to.

After a long argument between Luther and the church, Luther was      excommunicated from the church in the year 1521. This meant that he was not allowed to be a catholic priest anymore.  Pope Leo demanded Luther to take back everything that he said in his 95 Theses he even issued a bull of excommunication.

Luther said that he would if his Theses could be proven wrong by use of the Bible.

The Roman Catholic Church excommunicated Luther after he refused to recant because they knew they couldn’t ever prove Luther wrong. As I mentioned before the Catholic Church officials had no knowledge or comprehension of the Bible, they were selfish with wealth and power.

4)      Renaissance, the rebirth of art and the creative world. Paintings, architectures, literature and more were rediscovered.  The renaissance was an artistic revolution, first because of the realism of painting. Leonardo Da Vinci and other artists tried to achieve life in their paintings. This lead to research and greater detailed drawings. The human form of perfection was beginning to be focused on. Also, nature such as, animal life were being observed closely. Secondly, architecture was blooming. Sculptors wanted to learn how to make big roof tops like the Pantheon in Rome. Moreover, streets, cities, large homes were being constructed. Fin...
