In this assessment task we have been asked to choose an aspect of life in Roman Britain i chose to do my assessment task on settlement types and in an essay form. I have chosen this topic because it interests me in the way that the Romans have engineered and altered what was seen to be a barbaric area. I will also be answering three questions which I have researched on as included: which factors led to change and continuity under Roman rule, what historical or archaeological problems might limit our understanding and how these problems might be overcome.


As Rome invaded Britain in Ad43 they brought with them very structured and civilised ideas on construction and settlement types. As the Roman Army invaded Britain they built a system of roads, bridges and pathways changing what was natural track ways to gravel path ways changing the landscape of Britain. As bridges were built this meant that the Roman's usually did take a more direct and faster course. The reasons for the Roman's to change the pathways into roads and build bridges was so that they could travel quicker and bring in goods and supplies for the Roman Army as well as cultivating the land into their own. The fact that the Romans had built roads and bridges meant that they were able to get around more and setup camps and settlement types the Romans planned and constructed towns changing the shape of Britain to what was now Roman Britain. Rome’s structure and architectural styles was starting to take shape as the new urban settlements grew the outgrowth and development of large private estates and villas was now changing much of the landscaping as did the newly developed shops and public buildings which where built usually close to a water source and the roads which...
